About Creative Theater Workshop
Mission Statement:The Creative Theater Workshop, Inc. is a community based non-profit organization that encourages and promotes an interest in the theatrical arts by providing workshops and producing full-length musical productions in order to educate, entertain, and enrich the community.
Welcome to the Creative Theater Workshop. This non-profit program was started in the spring of 2006 by Michelle Hamstra, and since then it has grown to be one of the most successful children’s theater companies in Southwest Florida. Through CTW, young talented artists not only gain the experience of performing a full length musical, but also gain new knowledge through weekly workshops taught by CTW staff and outside members of the community. Previous workshops have included mime, Fosse style dance, ballroom dance styles, stage combat, theater tech, and audition techniques.
How does CTW work? Students must audition at the beginning of each season (typically August, January & May). Students prepare 16 bars (or 30 seconds with a karaoke track). Some students will be asked to come to a call back in order to read for a part. Once cast, students will be required to pay the workshop fee. (Workshop fees differ depending on the musical & payment plans are available). Workshops are offered throughout the rehearsal process to students who are cast in the show. Typical sessions last 12 weeks and meet once a week for rehearsal.
How can I prepare for the audition? Most students take voice lessons and work with their vocal coach on their audition material. A vocal coach is not required, and many get into CTW without the help of a coach. At the audition, relax, and have fun. Make sure you warm-up your voice before the audition & try to pick a song that can show some of your acting skills.
Can I attend a workshop if I’m not a part of the show? Unfortunately, only cast members can attend workshops. If you would like to take an acting class, Michelle Hamstra (owner/director) offers private lessons or small group lessons. From Our Director
I started Creative Theater in 2006 and I am amazed at how many talented kids we have in Southwest Florida! It has been an honor to watch kids experience theater for the first time or land their first professional job. From 2012-2014, more than 35 students from Creative Theater worked in professional theaters such as Broadway Palm and Theater Zone. My goal is not only to teach students theatrical skills, but to give them an outlet to have fun.
